Family lawyers
I've heard one recommendation for a family lawyer in South Africa: Gavin Shulman from UK Visa Centre, gavin@ukvisacentre.co.za.
Here was that reader's experience in mid-2023:
As a divorced parent I did not need to sue for sole custody as advised by other agencies and Gavin assisted me with this. He assessed the case at no charge and advised me of how we could proceed without any need to sue the other parent.
I then paid him half of his fee upfront, which was only R7,950 in total and the remaining amount once the visa was successful and in our hands. He was very patient and guided us on getting all documentation ready to prove that I had sole responsibility.
He is a quarter of the price of everyone else and he will not take on a case that he does not think will be successful and he was even willing to pay me back the initial payment should the visa be rejected.
I would highly recommend him.
We'd love other recommendations of family lawyers who have experience with immigration issues & custody. If you have someone to recommend, please let us know in the comments!
Parental affidavit forms
If you want to travel with your child, and the child has another parent/guardian who won’t be travelling with you, Home Affairs requires you to travel with a stack of paperwork.
This is the suggested format for the parental affidavit form:
